Composed by Errollyn Wallen to a libretto by Wesley Stace, Dido's Ghost is a sequel to Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas — which is incorporated in its entirety as a flashback within the new opera. This is not just a bold retelling of a familiar tale, but one which blends the boundaries between past and present and forces us to confront our past. Performed on period instruments, Dido’s Ghost bridges the gap between worlds, both musical and historical, to powerful effect.
